Course Description (Combined)

Language plays an important role in all areas of human life. In AL 1050, students examine historical and contemporary language use throughout the Pacific Basin, including Hawaiʻi. Through topics such as language and culture, linguistic diversity, linguistic features, language contact, and language loss and preservation, students develop a better understanding of, and appreciation for, the cultural, political, and social issues in the world where they will live, work, and study. (For purposes of transferability, this course satisfies General Education areas such as Social Science, Language and Culture, and Historical Studies content areas.)
