Themes include: landed and commercial expansion that drove the nation outward between the 1750s and 1940s; steady centralization of power at home, especially in the executive branch of government after 1890, and the role of foreign policy therein; isolationism; the singular importance of the transitional 1850 to 1914 era; and the interrelationship between U.S. social and diplomatic history.
