Course Description
This course will examine how Hawai‘i became integrated into global networks through its experience of trans-Pacific migrations, the rise and fall of the global whaling and sandalwood industries, the arrival of missionaries, the advent of colonialism, the rise and fall of its uniquely outward looking monarchy, its engagement in global conflicts, and the global context in which Hawaiians formed their unique cultural values, performance art, and music admired around the world.
