Course Description

This is a graduate level seminar on imperialism in modern history. The course will study the origins of the imperial idea, formal and informal, its apex in the 19th century, its waning if persistent influence in the second half of the twentieth century and its contemporary manifestations. It will discuss various interpretations of the phenomenon in comparative perspective and analyze it in terms of its associated political, economic and social relations (especially ethnic and gender issues).
